Labor Day Makeup Look

It's already September!!! Can you believe it?  June, July, and August went by so fast.  Below is a look I did over the past weekend.  I was trying to think of a cute way to incorporate red, white, and blue for this Labor Day look.  But, it's hard to use a red eyeshadow without it looking unsual.  UGH!  As usual, I used black eye liner and extended the line out.  The more drastic the appearance, the better. :) I complimented this look with a lip and cheek color that matches.  No products listed this time, I'll try and update later.  Let me know your thoughts.  Read. Comment. Enjoy!

Forgive those brows, I'm in between waxings LOL!  Just think of it as the heavy brow for winter.  Anyways, how did you spend your Labor Day?  Did you celebrate with fun and festive makeup like me?

Enter to Win Creme 11: Courtesy of Brazilian Wax Pittsburgh

TGIF!  How bout a giveaway to start your memorial weekend off right?!?! A big thanks to Verve360 for providing the prize!  A while ago I partnered up with Verve360 to giveaway Yonka Creme 93.  This time around I'm giving away Yonka Creme 11 valued at $56.00.  When you are looking for a quality Brazilian wax Pittsburgh doesn't have many options.  Verve360 are experts in their field.  Don't live in the Pittsburgh or the surrounding area?  That's OK!  You still have a chance to win because the giveaway is available to all of my subscribers and readers who live in the US.  YAY!  Now on to the giveaway....

This fabulous product is recommended after a a body or face waxing service, or facial.  We all have taken a personal day from work to get a massage, facial, and pedicure.  But sometimes, that much needed "day of pampering" can leave your skin irritated and red!  The Yonka 11 Creme desensitizes skin suffering with essential oils and plant extracts.  It nourishes, revitalizes, re-hydrates, and calms skin redness due to irritations.

Directions: Massage into clean skin.

Opalima Mineral Eye Shadow Swatches and Review

If you haven't tried a mineral cosmetic you have got to order one now!  Mineral makeup is amazing and is good for all skin types.  Mineral makeup absorbs oil and also allows your skin to breathe while wearing it!  A while ago I was sent some eye shadows to review for an upcoming cosmetic brand by the name of Opalima Beauty.

What is Opalima Beauty?
A mineral cosmetics line that specializes in being free of petrochemicals, parabens, talc, mineral oil, synthetic dyes and bismuth.  Opalima Beauty is founded on the notion that beauty should not sacrifice healthy ingredients.  The colors can be worn by women of all ethnic groups ranging from Fair Caucasian to Deep Ebony skin tones.  The line currently consists of the Bronzed Goddess (bronzers), Made You Blush (an assortment of blushes), Eyeshadows (House of Browns, The Bluez, just to name a few within the collection), and Liner Notes (eyeliner).  The founder is a Mother and Esthetician with over a decade of experience

Check out my thoughts and pics below!

Pictured: Opalima Mineral Eye Shadows - Green With Envy, and The Bluez

 Packaging

Swatched From Top to Bottom: Creamy Pearl, Green with Envy, The Bluez, and Soft Raspberry

My thoughts:
This is my first experience working with mineral eye makeup.  These loose powder mineral eye shadows go a long way.  I almost want to call them a pigment!  It takes very little product to cover the lids.  Once you apply the shadow, it goes on light, stays on strong, and doesn't crease.  The feel on the eye is so velvety and smooth.  The Opalima Beauty line isn't without some downfalls.  If you have never worked with loose powder mineral eye shadow, you will learn very fast that there is a lot of fall out.  However, this can be easily cleaned up with a makeup wipe.  I also wasn't a big fan of the packaging.  The small holes at the top of the eye shadow pot make it extremely hard to use.  Shake too much, and you'll have loose eye shadow everywhere...YIKES!  I do wish the eye shadow colors were more diversed for more dramatic looks.  But for the most part Opalima Beauty is a nice new brand to the cosmetic market.

What do you think of these eye shadows?  Which color is your favorite?

Spa Week: Review - Studio 921 Salon & Medi Day Spa

I'm baaaaaaaack! Can you believe it's April already?  I took a one month break from blogging...I have been so tired lately. *Calgon Take Me Away*  With all that has been going on in my personal life, I was so excited to receive an email for an opportunity to visit Studio 921 Salon & Medi Day Spa.  I was invited out to their Salon to enjoy one of their many Spa Week Treatments.

Speaking of Spa Week, your chance to take advantage of full service spa treatments for only $50 is right around the corner!  This Spring, Spa Week will be April 16-22, 2012, and you can start booking your appointments now!  Just go to spaweek.com to search for a spa in your area and call the spa directly to make an appointment.  Hurry, because time slots do fill fast.

Two weekends ago I drove out to Studio 921 in Baltimore, MD.  Not more than a 30 minute drive from where I live.  I was anxiously awaiting my 50 minute Swedish Massage all week, so I got in my car and rushed to get there.  I was in need of some "me" time and the experience did not disappoint!

Immediately when I walked in I noticed the hard wood floors and mood setting lighting.  The tile floors and cherry wood gave the inside an upscale and relatively luxurious feel.  I must say that the interior was in perfect sync with the awe-inspiring atmosphere.  When you check in at the front desk for the spa they take you through a glass door to a completely separate area from the salon.  The girl at the front desk escorted me to their lovely locker rooms to change into a soft, comfy robe.  You then go into a waiting area to fill out some paperwork before your message therapist comes in to meet with you and take you to your room.

My masseuse was Annie.  Before she started she asked how much pressure I preferred.  I mentioned to her not too light, but light enough so that she didn't cause any pain.  (I had a bad experience with a spa before and I woke up sore from my massage the next morning.  UGH!)  Not with Annie, she was awesome!  She makes you feel welcome and her sense of perfect pressure is expert.

In addition, to my amazing massage given by Annie.  She took the time afterward to show me around the rest of the salon and explained to me some of the services they also provided.  Studio 921 Salon & Medi Day Spa offers:
  • Haircuts & Hair Styling
  • Facials
  • Skin Care - Laser Hair Removal, Botox, & Permanent Make-Up
  • Body Treatments - Salt Scrub and Microdermabrasion
  • Nail Services
I have yet to try any of the other services they provide.  I live only a half hour away and will definitely be back.  The salon itself is gorgeous; it seemed to be adequately staffed, and all the employees seemed friendly and professional.  Just one of the many reasons you should check out this salon and spa!  Also, there is free parking in the lot and its located right across from the wine market.  It's the perfect place for an elegant but casual dinner. The two combined make for one spa-mazing day!

If you've had a chance to visit Studio 921 Salon & Medi Day Spa what are your thoughts?  Did you like it?  Would you go back?

{Disclosure: Studio 921 Salon & Medi Day Spa graciously offered me a Spa Week treatment of my choice for free, in exchange for an unbiased review.  All thoughts and ideas are my own and were not influenced in any way!}

Andalou Naturals Body Butter Review and GIVEAWAY! - CLOSED!

A couple of weeks ago the folks over at Andalou Naturals sent me this amazing body butter to review.  If you aren't familiar with the company here's a few tidbits.  Andalou means "Path of Light."  This reflects their goal to foster good things and enrich lives through skin, hair, and body care products.  The company uses Advanced Fruit Stem Cell Science blended with natural and fair-trade ingredients to make a product that is good for people and the environment.  Did you know?  For every Andalou.com sale and newsletter subscription, the company donates $1 to one of their four charitable organizations.  Greatness!  Don't you love a company that gives back?  You know what else I love?  The body butter they sent me.  Read on to find out why, you'll probably love this stuff too!

Andalou Naturals has some unique hair and body care products that smell really nice and refreshing.  The body butter scents include:
  • Lavendar Shea
  • Kukui Cocoa
  • Passion Fruit
Speaking of scents...

Immediately when I opened the jar the scent reminded me of a split open mango with an unripened banana stuck in it.  That's really the only way I can describe it LOL.  Fresh and light are the two main words that come to mind.  The passion fruit scent is simple.  I definitely know it's there, but it doesn't overwhelm me.  I only wish it had more of a fruity smell to it.  However, the scent did last a long time.

Not only does the scent last, but a little of this body butter goes a long way.  I like it for daily use on the hands and feet or anything else that feels rough and dry.  It has a whipped texture and you don’t need a large amount because it spreads out evenly and disappears into the skin very quickly.  It nourishes and moisturizes your skin, softening and suppling things up. Unlike other products that have Shea Butter in it, this one doesn't leave your hands sticky and oily.  I don't know about you but I hate when I use a body butter and a yucky fingerprint is left behind.  Especially on my keyboard at work...drives me NUTS!

An 8 oz. jar of this will last a long time.  Its available on their site for $13.95 or you have the chance to win it here on Makeup Not Down! *does the running man*  One fortunate Makeup Not Down reader will win a body butter of choice from Andalou Naturals. YAY!

WOC Look of the Day: Warm & Smokey Eyes

Hello dollfaces!  Thank Goodness Its Friday!  The past two weeks have been very busy for me.  It's been a while since I've done a look so I had to post it to the blog.  I wanted to use earth tone shadows and do a nude lip.  In my mind I was thinking "keep the look warm but still smokey." Its a subtle look that can easily be deepened with a darker shadow for more drama.  I think I'll call it "Sweet Sable."  As always, if there is a look you would like to see me recreate please email me at cj@makeupnotdown.com. I hope you enjoy.  YAY!

Eyes:
Espresso eye shadow - To fill in the eyebrows
Studio Finish Concealer NC45– On the entire lid from upper lash line to brow bone as a base.
Carbon eye shadow - In the crease
Amber Lights eye shadow - Pat on the entire lid and lower lash line
Blacktrack Fluidline Eye liner gel - To line upper lash line.
Smolder eye pencil – To line the waterline.

Lashes:
Duo Lash Adhesive- Apply a thin strip to the lash line.
False lashes (#4) - Apply as close to the natural upper lash line as possible.
MAC Opulash Mascara - Apply before putting on false lashes.

Face:
Matchmaster foundatin 7.0 - Apply with a 187 brush and start from the center of your face and blend out.
Select Cover Up Concelear NC45 - Right underneath the eye to cover up dark circle.  Make sure to blend with a soft fluffy brush.
Mineralize Skinfinish Powder (over top of the foundation) - Use the same 187 brush and apply all over your face.
Mineralize Skinfinish Powder (Sun Power) - Temples and face contour
Blot Powder Pressed - Dust it over the oily spots with a large powder brush and you are good to go.  I reapply this as much as needed throughout the day.
MAC Sheertone Shimmer Blush (Peachtwist) - Smile and apply to the apples of the cheeks

From Left to Right: Amber Lights, Espresso, Carbon, Select Cover Up Concelear NC45, Blacktrack Fluidline Eye liner gel , and MAC false lashes #4

Pictured: Hodgepodge Lip Liner, MAC lipstick - Blankety, and Cremesheen Lip Glass - Boy Bait

Pictured: Matchmaster foundatin 7.0, Mineralize Skinfinish Powder Sun Power, and Mineralize Skinfinish Powder, MAC Sheertone Shimmer Blush (Peachtwist)

By the way, who says you can't create a nude lip with a brown lip liner?!?!  Hodgepodge lip liner is a great neutal brown that pairs well with any color gloss or lipstick.  I really loved Blankety, the MAC lipstick I used with the liner as well.  My lips are so dark and I've had the hardest time finding the perfect color that would conceal the darkness and lighten them.  What are your thoughts?  Will you try to recreate the entire look?

Just created my first Polyvore set. Last night I caught up on old episodes of Kim and Kourtney take New York. So of course some of the outfits she was wearing inspired this set. I think we all can agree that she has a relatable style.
