Birthday Beauty Look: Frosty Eyes

I decided to have some fun with my makeup this past weekend since it was my birthday!!! YAY!  I experimented with frosty and neutral shadows.  I've never tried a frosty look before because I'm more of a smokey eye type of girl.  But I think I will work with the colors more in the future.  Besides, the look is very winter appropriate!

Espresso eye shadow - Fill in the eyebrows with an angle brush.  Just follow your natural brow shape.

Groundwork Paint Pot – Apply on the inner, middle, and outer part of lid.  This is a neutral base that is going to make the eye shadow stick to the lid and also allow the color to show brightly.

Blanc Type eye shadow - Over top of Groundwork paint pot in the inner half of lid only pat and pack the color onto the lid.

Brun eye shadow - On the outer crease work the color in with a 217 blending brush in an outer V formation

Carbon eye shadow – On the outer crease over top of Brun eye shadow.  Gently blend the color in circular motions with the same 217 blending brush.

Dazzlelight eye shadow - Apply a little to the brow bone for the perfect highlight.  Be careful and don't apply too much.  The shadow is really bright and silvery the last thing you want to look like is a clown.

Blacktrack Fluidline Eye liner gel - *artistic part* Line the upper lash line with an angle brush.  Extend the lash line up towards the end of the brow as much as you want.  Don't be afraid to be dramatic.  The key is to make the line as close to the lash line as possible.  You can go back later and make it fatter if you want.

Smolder eye khol pencil – Line the waterline and lower lash line.  Then take a 219 pencil brush and use dazzlelight eye show to apply over top of the smolder eye khol pencil from the outside to halfway in.

Peachtwist Sheertone Shimmer Blush - Apply to the apples of your cheek. (I like to apply a little to my temples too)  Make sure to smile while your doing it :)
Extras...

False lashes (#36)
Duo Adhesive
Studio Fix Foundation
Mineralize Skinfinish Powder (over top of the foundation)

All MAC products again because that's what I like :)  Check out the full lid pic.....

What do you guys think?  Easy or Complicated?  Try the colors out for yourself and send me pics!  Remember its just makeup you can always wash it off.

The Perfect Nude Lip for Women of Color

Some stars like Taylor Swift, Gweneth Paltrow, and Christina Aguilera are loving the cherry tomato red lip trend.  Generally speaking, blonds look best in blue reds, berry reds, and brick reds.  Bold red lips add instant Hollywood glamour.  The color is also ultra sophisticated and mature.  However, a near naked pout is sexy and classy!

For fair skin complexions I recommend a punchy, pinky, pale lip.  First, make sure your lips are soft and supple before applying the lipstick.  Apply a little bit of moisturizer, balm, or primer before you start.  Next stain the lips with MAC's lipstick in Lustre.  Then use a lip brush (you should invest in one) and apply Cremesheen Glass in Richer, Lusher to the center of the lip.  Move the brush back and forth to blend with the lipstick. Voila! It's that easy!

Now the below is a more beigey-bare lip color.  Sometimes a nude lip is harder to achieve on women of color because our lips are naturally darker.  Here's a tip: start with applying a little bit of foundation to the lip to make them appear lighter.  Next use MAC's Cremestick liner in Summerfruit to naturally line the shape of your lips.  The liner should blend into your lips.  YOU NEVER WANT TO SEE THE LINER!  Now apply MAC's Lip Gelee in Saplicious over top of the liner and you're done!

What do you think about the colors?  Will you try it?  Drop a few comments and lets discuss!

XOXO,
Dollfaces

A Diagram for Beginners

I got a few emails from my readers (BTW thanks so much for checking out the site) asking questions on the looks I've posted.  So I thought the diagram to the right would help my readers get to know their eye *wink*.  When you read my posts, hopefully you will better understand where to place certain colors or product.  So now that you have become more familiar with your eye...try the look in my next post.

All The Leaves Are Brown, and Perhaps Your Skin Is Too!

I'm not ready for the Winter and the idea of freezing weather makes me shiver. If you're like me (HATE the cold) than this look is for you! I used a few products from the MAC to the beach collection which was not my favorite.  But somehow I found a way to create a soft natural look using color. Yes you read what I wrote correctly! I actually used red eye shadow (well more like coral) on my lid....see below!

Face - Use foundation where needed. I applied it to my entire face but you don't have to.  Its whatever you wanna do!  Powder the shiny areas only.  Remember less is more.
* Studio Fix liquid foundation, Mineralize Powder (to set your foundation), and Blot powder (if needed)

Eyes - I tried to use colors that are natural, neutral, and matte but somehow red got thrown into the mix.  Apply painterly paint pot to the entire lid and brow bone with the 252 brush.  Then softly blend it out with the 222 brush.  You want a nice even then layer covering the eye, the paint pot is your base.  Use Espresso eyeshadow and the 226 angle brush to fill in your eyebrows.  Just follow the natural shape of your brow and fill in where needed.  Now pack on Firecracker eyeshadow (there's goes the red lol) to the inner lid with the same 252 brush.  Then blend it out with the 222 brush.  Apply Rice Paper eye shadow on the brow bone with the 224 brush.  Not too much just sweep a little of it on.  Take Smolder Eye Khol and apply it to your water line.  Then go back with a 217 pencil brush and use Firecracker eyeshadow (yes the red..it's okay lol) to line the lower lash line.  You want to sort of smudge it in with the Eye Khol pencil.  Finsh the eye by lining the upperlash line with Blacktrack fluidline eye liner gel.  Use an angle brush to get the perfect line.  TIP: the harder you press on the brush the thicker the line will be!
*Painterly paint pot, Firecracker eyeshadow, Rice Paper eyeshadow, Espresso Eyeshadow, Blacktrack fluidline eye liner gel, and Smolder Eye Khol pencil

Cheeks - Warm and Sunny just like a summer day!  This was the inspiration for the post right?  Apply blush to the apples of the cheek.  You know, right in the center.  Just look in the mirror, smile, and apply in a circular motion.  YUP YOU GOT IT!  Easy right?
*MAC Hipness Blush

Lips - *sigh* OK so I must admit lipstick breaks me out!! *double sigh* I have nothing on my lips in this post.  But I never like to let my readers down.  Use these colors for a really pretty neutral lip.
*Line the lips with MAC cremestick liner in SummerFruit and top it off with a warm Lip Gelée like Sapalicious

I almost forgot...complete this entire look off with several coats of masacara.  Or apply falsh lashes like I have on in the pic.  I love false lashes it always gives that extra "umph" LOL.

What are your thoughts on the MAC to the beach collection?  Try the colors out for yourself.  As always send me pics so I can see your looks :)

TLC For Your Lips

Kiehl's LIP Balm is my new favorite must have for the winter season.  The balm absorbs quickly and seals the lips, never leaving them chapped or feeling dry.  If you have moist lips one minute and dry the next..than this product is for you!  Put it on right before you go to bed and wake up with soft, moist, supple lips!  So start early before the harsh winter season hits.  Heal and hydrate those lips the right way.

Did I mention it has SPF in it too?  Makes me smile even more.

Pros:
  • Available in different scents like Cranberry, Mint, and Pear.
  • After moisturizing, it doesn't make your lips peel.
Cons:
  • It's a little on the expensive side for a lip balm but not as expensive as others.
  • The tube and packaging is kind of blah.
Try the Vanilla Scented Balm..Love Love Love it!  Let me know your thoughts.

Smokey: By Popular Demand

I think every girl loves a smoky eye look.  Almost every celeb and model is sporting this classy and sophisticated look these days.  This trend in makeup has yet to die.  So I thought I would show you how to create the look for yourself!

The key to a smoky eye is the technique and blending.  Not necessarily the color (most people think black!).  Use the eye shadow colors below and you too can rock this gorgeous look for yourself!  Send me pics so I can see J.
Studio Finish Concealer – Use this as your highlight color on the entire brow bone.  Apply with MAC’s 212 Flat Brush.  You want to define your eyebrow with the color and brush.
Espresso eye shadow - to fill in the eyebrows
Painterly Paint Pot – Apply on the inner, middle, and outer part of lid.
Saddle eye shadow – Above the crease but below the brow bone.  Make sure to work the color in and not out.
Carbon eye shadow – on the outer crease (work the color in with a 217 blending brush (think outer V formation)
Nylon eye shadow - over top of paint in the inner half of lid only
Blacktrack Fluidline Eye liner gel - upper lash line
Smolder eye khol pencil – Line the waterline and lower lash line.  It’s okay if it looks extra heavy.  Just blend it out with a 219 pencil brush

Extras...
False lashes (#2) and Duo Adhesive
Studio Fix Foundation
Mineralize Skinfinish Powder (over top of the foundation)

I know, I know..All MAC products again..promise I will experiment with others soon.  I hate the pic below..but I wanted you to see the full lid. :)

Brush Basics

Investing in quality brushes can be expensive.  But if you take care of them they will last you for years. Below are the basic brushes every girl should have in her make-up bag.  If you’re like me and obsessed with everything MAC you probably have all of their brushes.  MAC’s brushes are numbered in a way to help determine the usage.

The 100’s series – for face and cheek
The 200’s series – for eyes
The 300’s series – for the lips
Some brushes can be used in different ways.  For example, one brush can be used for concealer and eye shadow application.  So don’t worry too much about the numbers.  Now back to my must have recommendations…
#190: Foundation Brush – Use this brush to apply liquid, emollient and powder foundations, moisturizer, cheek hue, and cream color bases.  I love to use this brush to apply Studio Fix Liquid Foundation.

#129: Powder/Blush – This is great for applying loose or pressed  powder.  Ex. Blot powder or MAC mineralize powder on top of liquid foundation

#239: Eye Shader – Great for applying or building shadow color onto the lid.  Think “Patting color onto the lid technique.”  Just remember to tap the brush to rid it of excess shadow before applying.

#217: Blending Brush – The SOFTEST BRUSH EVER!  Designed for shading and blending crease and lid color.  ~Hint…windshield wiper motion or small circular buffing motions.

#266: Angle Brush – Ideal for lining the eye and eyebrow application.  Great for creating a sexy cat eye.  I use this brush to apply blacktrack fuildline gel liner (my fav!)

#219 Pencil Brush – Great for applying for color into the crease.  I also like to use it to smudge eye shadow on the upper and lower lash line.  I use it also to create a sexy smokey eye look.

It doesn't matter if you use expensive brand name brushes (MAC) or inexpensive (Sephora and Sonia Kashuk at Target are good brands.)  Simply knowing how to use them can mean the difference in a perfectly blended eye or a blotchy one.  Remember: Brushes are the essential tools to create a flawless look so make sure you're using the right ones.

Summer Leaves and Autumn Falls Into Place

I wanted to do a look that reminded me of Autumn....when the leaves start to fall and change colors.  Different shades of browns and gold struck my mind and I came up with this look.  I went for a really matte face, rosy cheeks, and pale lips. Enjoy!

Foundation – apply to the entire face including the lid and brow bone
Expresso eyeshadow - to fill in the eyebrows.  Apply the shadow at the bottom of the brow and brush upwards.
Embark eyeshadow - in the crease (wind shield wiper motion)
Charcoal brown eyeshadow - in the corner of the lid, slightly below the crease color
Bamboo paint - inner half of lid only
Woodwinked eyeshadow - overtop of paint in the inner half of lid only (pat the color in with MAC’s 239 brush)
Foundation - under the brow bone

Extras...
Blacktrack Fluidline Eye liner gel - upper and lower lash line
False lashes (#7)
Studio Fix Foundation
Mineralize Skinfinish Powder (over top of the foundation)

All MAC products...there ya go :)
Brushes below:

Eyes:
266 Small Angle Brush - To fill in the eyebrows, and upper and lower lash line
226 Fluffy Crease Brush - Crease and corner of eye
219 Pencil Brush - To smudge eyeliner on the upper and lower lash line
239 Eye Shader Brush - inner lid

Face:190 Foundation Brush
134 Large Powder Brush - Blush to the cheeks
Pic so you can see the entire lid :)

Lash Sass

Now you too can have lashes like your favorite stars. Celebrity makeup artist Stephen Moleski has his own line of eyelashes called “Smoke and Mirrors Beauty” at a very AFFORDABLE price. Unfamiliar with who Stephen is? Well I’m sure you’ve seen his work featured on the Kardashians. Yeah I love to hate on the beautiful Kim, Khloe, and Kourtney too! But one thing’s for sure is they always have flawless makeup. Their long, lush, sassy lashes are the secret to creating a perfect smokey eye. What makes Stephen’s lashes different from any others you buy at Sephora or other stores? Well his are 100% human hair. Which make the lashes look real and blend better with your natural lashes. Oh did I mention that the entire line are only $13.50 each ?!?!?! Check out Stephen’s site SmokeandMirrorsBeauty.com to get a pair. What will be your favorite? I think I’ll try the Chicago Lash!
